  • 1981 – 1986 Research assistant at the Centre of Radiation Research, University of Gießen
  • 1986 Doctorate in physics, with a thesis on "Effects of monochromatic and polychromatic ultraviolet radiation on Chinese hamster cells"
  • 1983 – 1986 Part-time lecturer on "Biophysics" and "Optical methods in biology and medicine" at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, University of Applied Sciences Gießen-Friedberg
