Jiri Patocka, co-editor of the Journal of Applied Biomedicine, is a professor in toxicology, the department of radiology and toxicology, Faculty of Health and Social Studies, University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic. He was born on April 24, 1939 in Veverska Bityska, he is married, and he has one son and two daughters.
     Jiri Patocka studied chemistry and physics at the Faculty of Sciences Masaryk University Brno, and graduated in 1962, RNDr. in 1972, CSc. in biochemistry 1977, and DrSc. in toxicology 1992.
     The first period of his research praxis was from 1962 untill 2006 in Hradec Kralove as head research worker and Professor of toxicology (2000) at the Department of Toxicology, Military Medical Academy, which cooperated in medical and pharmaceutical studies with the Charles University Medical Faculty also situated in Hradec Kralove. He is a member of the Czech Chemical Society, the Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Czech Histo- and Cytochemical Society, the Czech Society of Industrial Toxicology, the Czech Society of Biological Psychiatry, the Czech Psychopharmacological Society, the European Peptide Society and the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO).
     His next University appointment was at the Department of Radiology and Toxicology, Faculty of Health and Social Studies, University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice. His work there concentrated on the education of specialists in radiation and chemical protection of the inhabitants or professional workers and the civilian population.
     He has published more than 350 scientific papers and presented more than 200 lectures and posters at scientific meetings. He is the author and co-author of 18 books and/or textbooks, e.g., Military Toxicology (GRADA, Prague 2004) or chapters in monograph, e.g., Handbook of the Toxicology of Chemical Warfare Agents (Academic Press/Elsevier 2009). He has more than 400 citations in SCI, Hirsch-index = 14. He is the Co-Editor of the Journal of Applied Biomedicine, and a member of the Editorial board of Vojenske zdravotnicke listy: both are published in the Czech Republic.
     His scientific work focuses on the biochemical mechanisms of toxic action of different biologically active compounds, mainly on inhibition of cholinesterases, including their application as Alzheimer's disease drugs and on the function of centrally active anticholinesterases and different peptides in teaching and memory processes. He is interested in the popularization of science and has published hundreds of articles in special journals and newspapers - Vesmir, Ziva, Zdravotnicke noviny, MF Dnes, Lidove noviny and others. He is engaged in the development and maintenance of the Internet server Toxicology (http://www.toxicology.cz) much-frequented by students and professionals working in toxicology.
