General

The Editor will consider for publication original papers and reviews offering a transfer of basic research to applied biomedicine. The Journal of Applied Biomedicine promotes the translation of basic biomedical research into clinical investigation, the conversion clinical evidence into practice, and the publication of new ideas for conquering human health problems across disciplines. Particular emphasis is given to problem-oriented studies.
The Journal receives research papers from Europe and overseas, there are not restrictions on author, country or institute.

Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been published before (except in form of an abstract or as a part of a published lecture, review or thesis); that is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, as well as facility or explicity - by the responsible authorities at the institution where the work was carried out. An author may make an article published by the Journal of Applied Biomedicine available on his/her personal home page, provided the source of the published article is cited; authors are requested to create link to the published article in the Journal of Applied Biomedicine on-line.

While the advice and information in this Journal is believed to be true, neither the authors, the editors, nor the publisher can accept any legal responsibility for any errors or omissions that may be made.

Editorial procedure

All submissions are subject to peer review, and to language- and copy-editing after acceptance. At least two independent scientists act as referees of one manuscript. Reviewers evaluate manuscripts critically but constructively to prepare detailed comments about the research and the manuscript to help authors improve their work. Their evaluation includes assessments of the originality and importance of the research; the design of the study; the methods of study, including analytic and statistical methods; the presentation of the results; possible confounding; the strength of the conclusions; and the overall quality of the manuscript. Reviewers have a responsibility to report suspected duplicate publication, fraud, or plagiarism to the Editor. Reviewers include treating the manuscript as a confidential document and completing the review promptly. Reviewers should not show the manuscript to anyone else without the expressed consent of the editor. Reviewers should not communicate directly with authors or even identify themselves to authors.

The editors request that authors send a list of five additional potential reviewers. These individuals must be experts on the subject material of the paper, and must not be from the same institution(s) as the author(s) of the paper. It is also highly recommended that these potential reviewers belong to institutions from as many different regions as possible (Europe, America, Asia, etc.). Please include the email address, institution and mailing address of each reviewer. We request that you include each referee´s area of expertise and why this scientist is qualified to review your work. (Editors are not limited to such suggestions.)

Identifies of reviewers will not be released to authors. The review process is expected to be complete within eight weeks, but unpredictable events as conflicting recommendations may cause some delay. Reviewers are asked to make one of five recommendations: accept, accept after minor revision, reconsider after major revision, not yet ready for publication, reject.

The decision to ask for revisions is made in light of the reviewers´ comments and recommendations, and after evaluation by the Editor. The editor may reject manuscripts without outside review, for example if the subject matter is outside the scope of the journal, a manuscript on the same topic is just about to be published, the quality of the manuscript is poor, or criteria for the submission of manuscripts are not met.

Manuscripts should not exceed 50,000 letters. Contributions are published in English; authors whose mother tongue is not English are strongly urged to have manuscripts reviewed linguistically before submission.

All submitted manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement signed by all authors that the article is original, is not under consideration or has not been previously published elsewhere (exceptions should be negotiated on advance with the editors). The Editor expect each authors to have read the complete manuscript and to take responsibility for the content with his/her co-authors.

Files sent as an e-mail attachment or a CD/DVD (ASCII, Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TIFF, JPEG, CDR; do not submit docx files) should be submitted to the editorial office. The preferred method of manuscript submission is via e-mail as electronic files to the Editorial Office: japplbiomed@gmail.com. To aid the Editor in file management, please start all filenames with the same of the first author; it would also be useful to include the date: e.g., jung_18Jan07.doc (spell out month to avoid confusion). Important: Please place the date of submission on the top right corner of the title page and change the date on subsequent revisions. A corresponding author will receive a confirmation of manuscript receipt via e-mail. (Authors who have not received a confirmation within one week should check with the Executive Editor.)

Authors are allowed 28 days to undertake revisions suggested by reviewers. Revised manuscripts that do not meet this deadline will be treated as new submissions and may be subject to further reviewing.

Organization and general style of research articles

Pages should be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page. Please remember to use line numbering in the manuscript text file.

HEADING: Give title, names of all authors (first names in full and surnames), place of work, each on separate line. Titles are capitalized sentence style; there may be one subtitle which is run in after the tile, separated by it from a colon and its first word is lowercased; do not use dashes or periods to separate parts of a title. Separate names with commas, but not semicolons. The affiliation is expressed as simply as possible.

DATES NOTE: Should take the form: Received XXYYZZ. Published online XXYYZZ., each on a separate line.

SUMMARY: Generally, it should not exceed 200 words. It should summarize the aim of the paper, the results and the principal conclusions.

KEY WORDS: Select a set of five to ten index terms.

ADDRESS: For the corresponding a full postal address, an e-mail address, phone and fax numbers are necessary.

SECTIONS: The standard order of sections for original papers is Introduction (long historical introductions should be avoided, a reference to bibliographies in handbooks or the like suffices), Material and methods, Results, Discussion which should incorporate the conclusion(s) drawn from the study, Acknowledgements, References, numbered tables with legends, and illustrations or graphs in high quality with legends on separate sheets. Do not divide words. Graphics should never be embedded in the text file.
Human and animal rights must be respected with respect to rules which are valid in EU and USA. Authors are required to disclose any potential conflict of interest.

STATISTICS is a part of Material and methods. Authors should use the significance level 2alpha=0.05 (or alpha=0.025)

REFERENCES: The list of references should be at the end of the article and arranged in alphabetical order by first author. Only internationally accessible recent works should be cited. Every citation must have a reference and every reference, a citation. References may be cited only in the main text, figure legends and tables; do not cite in summaries, figure titles, or table titles.
(i) Within the text: Smith (1999), (Smith 1999), (Smith and Newman 2001), (Smith et al. 2002); all publications referred to in the text must be cited in full in the list of references;
(ii) Under References: Cite all authors* and full article title, abbreviate names of periodical basically according to the World list of Scientific periodicals, 4th Edition, Butterworths, London 1964 - 1965; number of pages is requested for monographs.

"IN PRESS": A paper should not be cited as ‘‘in press'', unless it has been accepted for publication. In such cases the name of the journal must be given, it is also recommended to write DOI. Citations such as "personal communication" or "unpublished data" should not be used. Attention to punctuation is required.
*If there are twelve and more authors, list the first twelve authors followed by et al.

TABLES must be numbered consecutively (Arabic numerals) and referenced in the text. They should include headings and explanations. Avoid using vertical rules in tables. References in the text: (Table 1, Tables 1 and 3, Tables 1-3). Parenthetical mentions should not include see unless necessary. Tables must be submitted text files (tiff or other graphic files are not acceptable).

UNITS, SYMBOLS, ABBREVIATIONS. SI units and the conventions of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) are recommended; except for thermodynamics, the Celsius temperature scale should be used. Abbreviations must be kept to a minimum; ad hoc abbreviations should be avoided. Except for standard physiological abbreviations (ATP, NAD, EDTA, DNA, RNA etc.) all abbreviations must be explained.

GENUS and SPECIES NAMES should be in italics.

ILLUSTRATIONS must be numbered sequentially (Arabic numerals) and referenced in the text. Their captions and legends should form a separate, fully self-explanatory unit. Do not use very fine lines or dots. References in the text: (Fig. 1, Fig. 1 and 3, Figs 1-3, Fig. 3A, Fig. 3A,D). Parenthetical mentions should not include see unless necessary. Never submit graphics imported into a word processor format (e.g. as *.doc files). We prefer to receive figures in high-resolution TIFF format. Image formats that we can accept include TIFF, JPEG and CDR (versions 3 - 11). We cannot accept image files in Power Point, Microsoft Word or Excel. The resolution for line figures should be at least 1000 dpi, for black and white images should be at least 600 dpi and for colour images at least 600 dpi.
To add lettering, we request to use Arial. Keep lettering consistently sized throughout your final-sized artwork, usually about 12 -16 pt. Avoid effects such as shading, outline letters, etc. Do not include titles or captions into your illustrations. All fonts in CDR images should be converted to outlines.
Authors must prepare their illustrations to match following sizes: 1 column width (7 cm) or the whole page width (16 cm); length can vary, but must not exceed 20 cm. When submitting a panel, all parts should be arranged as one figure and saved in a single file. Panels should not be boxed in by borderlines. The vertical and horizontal space between the individual parts of a figure should be consistently 1 mm.
Please, name files by first author and number of figure (e.g. Newman1.tif, Newman2.tif etc).

NB: Manuscripts not following the present instructions are returned without editorial evaluation. Authors are advised to consult a current issue of the journal for general and specific manners of presentation.

Ethical standards

Authors are required to disclose any potential conflict of interest.
Human and animal rights must be respected with respect to rules which are valid in EU and USA. Manuscripts submitted for publication must contain a statement to the effect that all human studies have been approved by the appropriate ethics committee and have therefore been performed in accordance with the ethical standards laid down in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki and its later amendments. It should also be stated clearly in the text that all persons gave their informed consent prior to their inclusion in the study. Details that might disclose the identity of the subjects under study should be omitted. The editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts that do not comply with the above-mentioned requirements. The author will be held responsible for false statements or failure to fulfill the above-mentioned requirements.

The Do’s and Don’ts

• Check the Instructions for Contributors carefully as different publishers use different formats. Do not submit a manuscript that does not conform to these Instructions.
• Leave yourself open to accusations of self/plagiarism.
• Make sure your paper has a logical structure.
• When you resubmit a manuscript following peer-reviewing process include a detailed covering letter explaining any changes. If you don’t agree with the reviewer´s comments, that is fine as long as you explain why in this letter.

After acceptance

PROOFS: Proofs will be sent as a PDF file to the e-mail address of the corresponding author who is obliged to return them to the editor. Please, note the deadline for corrections: two working days. All necessary amendments must be properly written by e-mail or marked on the paper copy using standard proof symbols; attention should be paid to the occurrence of printing errors. Substantial changes and additions are not permitted. Corrected proofs which are not returned to the editorial office in the stated period will appear in one of the subsequent issues of the journal.

The Copyright of published articles is the property of the Journal. It is an absolute condition that submitted manuscripts have not been published, and will not concomitantly be submitted or published elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree that the copyright to their article is transferred to the Journal (see Copyright Transfer Statement, pdf, 76 kB), effective if and when the article is accepted for publication.

The Editor reserves the right to make changes when desirable for clarification or considering purposes. Publication of accepted papers is free of charge except for colour images. (It is the current policy to underwrite all normal black-and-white tabular and illustration costs. It is the policy of the Journal not to levy page charges. However, because of the very high cost of color reproduction, such work will be initiated only at the author´s request and expense.) The corresponding author will be provided with a free pdf-file of the article. Until publication of the print edition, corrected proofs will be available on line (Online First) and can be cited with their DOI. A DOI number will be printed on the title page of each article. DOIs can be useful in the future for identifying and citing articles published online without volume or issue information. More information can be found at www.doi.org.
